T3 at Melbourne Airport (MEL) is the current Domestic Terminal, used mainly by Virgin Australia, previously the Ansett Australia terminal, and strongly linked with the history of domestic air travel in Australia. I will then research its history, geometry, recent developments, amenities, functions, and its role in future aero-planning in Melbourne.

The construction of Terminal 3 started back in 1970 as the Ansett Australia domestic terminal. A second pier was added in 1991 to accommodate regional airlines, such as Kendell, run by Ansett.

Thereafter, MEL bought back the terminal asset after the collapse of Ansett in 2001 and the subsequent aborted takeover by Tesna Group. Virgin Blue (later Virgin Australia) moved its domestic operations that had previously operated under what was Domestic Express (Terminal 4) into T3, using the former Golden Wing Lounge and other facilities

Terminal 3 today is a busy domestic base of Virgin Australia, which can now deliver up to 600 services a week connecting Melbourne to other cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Hobart, and others. Rex (Regional Express) flights also fly out of the terminal, along with a Rex lounge.

T3 is a single-story building that comprises two piers. At T3, there are 11 aerobridge parking stands and eight remote ones, making the facility able to serve airlines.

Departures and Check-In: Level 1, Departures and Check-In with self‑service kiosks, bag-drop booths, and premium check‑in available at the dedicated check-in area of business velocity frequent flyers.

Arrivals: People can reach the baggage reclaim on the mezzanine ground floor using escalators or a lift from the arrivals level. Arriving passengers at the T3 terminal of the airport are advised to move down to retrieve luggage on carousels and look out for signs to continue with their journeys.

Terminals 3 and 4 at MEL opened a new indoor departures-level walkway in August 2022, which supports a unified and centrally based security screening facility within T4. The change has resulted in more efficient passenger movement, the ability to leave laptops in bags by travelers, and reduced congestion at T3.

Passenger Experience Enhancements

A transformation project launched in 2021 that delivers a CAD 30 million transformation project has brought in:

  • Improved facilities such as new toilets, adult-change rooms, and assistance animal relief areas, and an expanded parent room with interactive walls at Gates 12.
  • Better circulation, as the escalators, the lifts, and the stairs are more passenger oriented.
  • A lengthened baggage hall, which provides an estimated 85 percent more carousels to accommodate arrivals, minimizes the number of individuals in a space and the wait time.
  • It also brought in the top-of-the-line facilities, self-service bag presentation areas, support service pods, and specific lounge entrances for special flyers that go into remodeled security points, followed by entry to the gates.

T3 also has contemporary restaurants and shops that reflect the gastronomic panorama of Melbourne, and local and national brands were incorporated into the departure concourse. The culture of these venues is representative of the city and gives the passengers a chance to relax before boarding.

The Virgin Australia Lounge is located immediately after passing through security checks, and it serves business class and Velocity members as well as gold and platinum members, which is convenient before gate access points. Click the button below to check out the facilities.

Access to mobility: Wheelchairs and trolleys are available (trolleys to be paid for); the passengers are recommended to book assistance with the airlines.

Parent and child facilities: Parent interactive rooms and accessible bathrooms are placed in areas of primary gates.

Excessive baggage and animal relief zones: Zones to allow easy claim and assistance animals. Click the button below to check out that facilities.

A proposed airport rail link between MEL and CBD via Sunshine station and the Metro Tunnel was stalled in 2023 after disagreements between the Victorian and federal governments over the design of the stations on the line. The deal has been reached whereby the airport CEO, Lorie Argus, is agreeing to receive an elevated station instead of the preferred underground one, and the rail line will open by the target 2033, in line with the third-runway project and estimated 45 million annual passengers.

A third runway has been approved by the government to be completed by the year 2031 to cater to the increase in passenger and airline activities at the Melbourne Airport. This will work towards the expansion of terminals such as T3 and requires the enhancement of transport connections (rail and road) to facilitate the growing amount of traffic in a manner that will not divert community noise issues.

Terminal 3 continues to be a major part of the domestic network of the Melbourne Airport:

  • It is the hub of operations of Virgin Australia, which has a wide domestic network.
  • The refurbishment and walkways connecting to T4 are future-proofing it to grow whilst enhancing passenger flow and convenience in a dramatic way.
  • With Melbourne Airport undergoing an extensive expansion (third runway and rail link), T3 will undergo further development, providing improved retail, transport access, and the ability to serve increasing passenger traffic.
Melbourne terminal 3 passenger guide
  • Coming by air: Disembark at the T3 pier and transfer to the mezzanine.
  • Baggage reclaims: Make your way to the ground floor carousels down a lift or escalator.
  • Ground transport: Easy-to-follow signage directs passengers to car parks, ride sharers, SkyBus, and future rail-provided terminals.
  • Departure passengers: Check in at Level 1 with self-service kiosks or the manned helpdesk counter and bag drop pods. Premium travelers go through controlled lanes.
  • Security Checker: Deadline in Terminal 4 by way of the inter-terminal walkway—no need to take laptops off. Leisure before Check-in: Shops and restaurants at Gateway Walk or the historic FB-style outlet while getting chilled and relaxing in SriLankan’s lounge at gates 1-10 before boarding.

The redevelopment of Terminal 3 is a perfect example of airport renovation, converting an aging Ansett terminal into a state-of-the-art facility that brings people and action into the design. Be it domestic travel on Virgin or travelers through the broader Melbourne Airport network, the modern T3 presents greater functionality, comfort, and urban relevance. Just ask me if you want maps, lounge information, transit schedules, or how to get around T3 easily!
